What types of Swiss plug are there?
There is a standard 10 amp version available as 2 pin (unearthed) and 3 pin (earthed). There is also a higher rated 16 amp version.
Switzerland also accepts the 2 pin CEE7/16 Europlug, which is very similar to the Swiss 2 pin 10 Amp plug.
What approvals does a Swiss plug or power cord have?
The standard to which Swiss plugs and power cables are made is SEV 1011, and the approval body to which they must conform is SEV or S+. SEV = Schweizerischer Elektrotechnischer Verein or Swiss Electrotechnical Association, sometimes anglicised to Electrosuisse.
The 10 Amp is listed under SEV 1011 typ 12 and the 16 Amp under SEV 1011 typ 23.
As of 2013, all Swiss plugs must have partially-insulated live and neutral pins.
Where is the Swiss plug used?
Whilst used almost exclusively in Switzerland, it is the standard plug type for Liechtenstein; it is also one of the types used in Rwanda.
Whilst similar in appearance, the Swiss and Brazilian types are not interchangeable as the earth pins are in different locations.
