JAPANESE PLUGS

What types of Japanese plug are there?
Whilst originally identical to USA plugs, the Japanese plug is now manufactured to stricter tolerances, carries Japanese approvals, and is on metric (mm2) cable. As well as normal 2 pin unearthed and 3 pin earthed versions, there also exists a 2 pin plug with a flying earth wire. Japan also has medical grade plug specified under JIS T1021, but its use in hospitals is not mandatory. Japan runs on 2 discrete frequencies: 50Hz Osaka/Eastern Japan and 60 Hz Tokyo/Western Japan. It is worth checking which grid will be used if using sensitive equipment.

What approvals does a Japanese plug or powercord have?
Japanese plugs are manufactured to JIS 8303, and are approved by DENAN (PSE). JIS C3306 is the standard for cable, which is only used in Japan. Approval markings on the plug, cable and connector: ‘PSE’ or ‘PSE JET’.

Where is the Japanese plug used?
The Japanese plug is used solely in the Japanese Islands.
